Trial of Sheik Aisami’s Suspected Killers Delayed

The trial of the two dismissed soldiers, Lance Cpls John Gabriel and Adamu Gideon in connection with the killing of the Islamic Cleric in Yobe State, Sheik Aisami Goni Gashua, may experience some delay over the vacation in the courts.

The Nation discovered police have already sent the case file to the Ministry of Justice, but the case cannot be filed because all the courts in the country are on vacation.

Yobe Police Public relation Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkareen on when the suspects would be charged to court told press that the police have already sent the ‘case file’ to the Director of Public Prosecution(DPP) in the Ministry of Justice for advice.

“The police have finished their job and sent the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice. As soon as the file is returned to us, we shall be proceeding to the High Court with the charges,” DSP Abdulkareen said.

The Director Public Prosecution in the Ministry of Justice, Yobe Ali Adam confirmed the receipt of the case file from the police when contacted.

According to him, his office was working on the case file but the arraignment of the suspect cannot be anytime soon as the courts are on vacation.

“Yes we have received the case file from the police but the due to the vacation of the higher courts across the country, it will take a little time before the suspects would be arraign in court.

“We are however looking of the possibility that the case file will be ready before the resumption of the court which maybe at the middle of this month of September,” Adams said.

The Lawyer reports that Sheik Aisami Goni was reportedly killed on the 19/08/2022 on his way back from Kano via Nguru by one Lance Coporal John Gabriel who later called his friend Adamu Gideon later arrested by the police.

The Army in a summary trial at 241 RECCE Battalion Nguru dismissed the two soldiers and handed them back to the police where they are expected to face civil prosecution.

The two soldiers are in detention at the State CID Damaturu awaiting to be charged to court.
