Ogbonnaya Onu Dies At 71

The Nigerian political landscape has been struck by a great loss with the passing of Hon Dr Ogbonnaya Onu CON, a renowned politician, author, and engineer.

Onu, who served as the first civilian governor of Abia State and later as the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, died at a hospital in Abuja. He was 71 years old.

News of Onu’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, with mourners gathering at his Abuja residence to pay their respects and offer prayers for his soul. The family is expected to release an official statement in due course.

Ogbonnaya Onu’s life was marked by a deep commitment to public service and a passion for driving progress in Nigeria. Trained in the United States, he began his career as a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt before transitioning into national politics during the country’s return to civilian rule in the early 1990s.

In 1992, Onu made history as the first civilian governor of Abia State, though his tenure was cut short by political upheaval. Undeterred, he remained dedicated to his political aspirations, making several bids for the presidency over the years.

Most recently, Onu served as the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation under the Buhari administration from 2015 until his resignation in 2022 to contest the presidential primaries.

As the nation comes to terms with this profound loss, Ogbonnaya Onu’s legacy as a visionary leader, dedicated public servant, and champion of innovation will continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians. His tireless efforts to advance the country’s scientific and technological capabilities will forever be remembered.
