Nigerian Law School Queries law Student For Drinking Water Without Cup During Law Dinner

In a letter currently making rounds all socal media, The Council of Legal Education in charge of the Nigerian Law School has reportedly queried a student of the Lagos Campus (name unknown) for drinking water directly from the bottle without the use of an available cup at the Law Dinner held on the 16th of June, 2022.

This is contained in a letter dated June 20, 2022 addressed to the student signed by the Director of Students Affairs, Fagbemi Charity-Titilayo (Mrs.), for the Director& Head of Academics. The alleged conduct, according to the letter, is in violation Rule 6(29) of Code of Conduct for Students of the Nigerian Law School

“it has been reported by the Director and Head of Academics of June 16, 2022 that while Law Dinner was on going in the Dining Hall, you were found putting a bottle of water in your mouth when a glass cup was on your table.

“Consequently, you are requested to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for violating Rule 6(29) of the Code of Conduct for students of Nigerian Law School on dinner etiquette and manners.” the letter reads in part

The student was therefore directed to respond within 24 hours. It reads, “Your representation, if any should be forwarded to the Director and Head of Academics within 24 hours on receipt of this letter.”

It is now a norm not only in the Nigerian legal profession but some countries that law dinner must be held for law students who are in law school before they will be qualified to be called.

Before one can be called to the Nigerian Bar, such a person must dine three times, the first two will be done while still at the law school and the last one will be during the call to the bar ceremony.

It therefore means that it is only those who pass the Bar Final Examinations that would have the last dinner.

The idea behind the dinner is to create an avenue for the students to meet with members of the legal profession and the benchers, as well as to inculcate the dinner culture of learned gentlemen into the students.

Before the first dinner, students are given practical classes on how to use the cutleries, hold cups and how to use cloth napkins.

On the day of the dinner, they are usually asked to form a queue for inspection.

Students are not allowed to enter the dinner hall until they are properly dressed.

For the male students they must be on a black trouser, white shirt, with black tie, and a black suit, black socks , black shoes and their hair must be well cut. For the ladies, you must wear a black skirt which must not be above your knees, white shirt, with a suit, there must be no form of attachment on the hair, it must be natural hair and well packed, the makeover has to be moderate or no makeover at all, black shoes with no shinning leather, no blink blink of whatsoever. Also, their earing must be small and simple.
