Abuja and Kogi Hit by Blackout Following Power Station Collapse

Power outages are currently affecting some residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and certain areas in Kogi State due to technical issues.

These regions are within the service area of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

A technical fault on the 33kv feeder k6 from AT9 Karu Transmission Station has been identified as the cause of the power disruption, as reported by the AEDC to its customers in Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, and other parts of Abuja.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured customers that efforts were underway by the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s maintenance crew to restore power supply in the affected areas.

In a separate development, the TCN announced planned maintenance on its TR3 45MVA and TR2 60MVA power transformers at the 132/33kV Okene Transmission Substation, scheduled to take place from Tuesday to Wednesday.

During this maintenance period, power supply to Okene, Kabba, Ososo, and Ikare from the substation will be temporarily disrupted, with restoration expected once the maintenance is completed according to TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah.

Additionally, the TCN recently commissioned a 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer at the Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation in collaboration with the World Bank, aiming to increase the substation’s bulk transmission capacity by 80MW.

This capacity expansion is part of a broader initiative that includes rehabilitating and expanding the 132/33kV transmission substation, adding three feeders, and associated accessories for improved service delivery.

Regarding the overall power supply situation, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has summoned the AEDC and TCN management to address the worsening power supply in their operational areas since the beginning of the year.

While various factors such as gas shortages, vandalism, and energy theft have been cited by Discos and TCN as contributing to the challenges in power supply, efforts are underway to mitigate these issues.
