24-year-old Arraigned For Robbery, Cultism

A 24-year-old man, Ekeng Effiong, was on Monday remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre by an Ikeja Magistrate’s court sitting in the Ogba area of Lagos State, for alleged attempted robbery and forming an unlawful society.

Magistrate Mrs Akinyemi gave the order after the defendant, who was facing three counts bordering on armed robbery and forming an unlawful society.

The police prosecutor, Mr Ibo Daniel, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 14, 2023.

He said the defendant allegedly used stones with other weapons to damage the side glasses of a Volkswagen bus with registration no: KRD 395 Y in an attempt to rob Aiyewunmi Sunday “m” who was travelling with his family to Ogun State.

The offence was said to be punishable under Section 299 298(2) (a) (b) and 2(3) (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The charge sheet read, “Count I: That you, Ekeng Effiong “m” with others still at large on February 14, 2023, at about 1140hrs along Abeokuta Expressway by tollgate, Alakuko area Lagos in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit attempted robbery and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

“Count II: That you Ekeng Effiong “m” with others still at large on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District did with intent to commit robbery by using stones with other weapons to damage the side glasses of a Volkswagen bus with Reg no: KRD 395 Y property of one Aiyewunmi Sunday “m” who was travelling with his family to Ogun State and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 298(2) (a) (b) Criminal Laws of the Lagos State.

“Count III: That you Ekeng Effiong “m” with others still at large on the same date at Alakuko Market in the aforementioned Magisterial District did intentionally form or combine and agree to form and organise an unlawful society or cult named Eye confraternity knowing same to be unlawful and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 2(3) (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) of the Lagos State.

Magistrate Mrs Akinyemi did not take the plea of the defendant.

The case was adjourned till March 3 for mention.
