Travel Agent Jailed Two Years For Canadian Visa Fraud

Magistrate Abimbola Amole-Ajimoti of the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, sentenced a travel agent, Olanrewaju Sangodoyin, to two years’ imprisonment for defrauding his client, Mutiu Yekini.

Our correspondent gathered that the 33-year-old was paid a sum of N750,000 for the processing of a Canadian visa.

However, the convict did not deliver on the job or return the money to Yekini.

The police charged Sangodoyin with fraud and theft, offences punishable under sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The prosecution counsel, Sgt. Philip Amusan, told the court that the convict on December 17, 2018, with intent to defraud, obtained N750,000 from Yekini at Imalefalafia, Idi-Ope, Ibadan.

Amusan said, “The defendant fraudulently obtained the money to procure a Canadian visa for Yekini, knowing same to be false.”

The magistrate sentenced the convict to jail without a fine option.

Amole-Ajimoti said, “The convict is found guilty as charged. He is hereby sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on count one of fraud without an option of a fine.

“He is also sentenced to one-year imprisonment for stealing money from the complainant. The sentence is to run concurrently.”
