States, Not FG, Should Determine Creation Of LGs — Akeredolu
Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has criticised moves to grant local government councils financial and administrative autonomy.
Akeredolu spoke yesterday at an event to honour individuals who struggled for the creation of the state. He urged the federal government to divest itself of the responsibilities which are local.
He said as a federation, it is the responsibility of the state governments to determine the number of local governments they want.
He stressed the need for the various federating units (states) to be in control of their resources.
The governor stressed that the current political arrangement must be tinkered with significantly for real progress to occur.
“The states of the federation cannot continue to depend on hand-outs from the federal government for even the payment of workers’ salaries,” he said.
Those honoured are: Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa, Baba Animasaun, Chief Olu Adeyemi, R.A Olusa, and J.A. Olukoju.
