Plateau LG Crises: State Assembly Passes No Confidence Vote On CP

The Plateau State House of Assembly, on Thursday, passed a vote of no confidence on the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Bartholomew Onyeka, and called for the immediate re-opening of the secretariats of the 17 Local Government Areas in the State.

Hon. Ishaku Maren, member representing Bokkos state constituency made the disclosure while addressing journalists on behalf of other members of the House.

The legislators accused the State’s Commissioner of Police of misleading the IGP on the true situation of things in the State because of his political interest and involvement.

The lawmakers maintained that the Police ought to protect lives and property of citizens and to give proper protection to constituted authorities within the State, saying that what is rather happening in the State was a reversal.

Maren further maintained that the Commissioner of Police instead of being neutral in the political situation, has proven otherwise.

The Inspector General Of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, ordered the Plateau State Commissioner of Police to seal up all the secretariats of the 17 Local Government Councils in the State.

It would be recalled that the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, had recently approved the immediate suspension of the 17 Local Government Council Chairmen whose tenure had not elapsed, a development which did not go down well to with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State as it has condemned the decisiom in totality.

Most of the suspended council chairmen elected on the platform of APC refused to vacate their offices for the incoming PDP transition committee members to take over, thereby creating tension in the state.

But, the Police in a statement issued in Jos, the State capital by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Alfred Alabo, said the the decision to seal off all the local government secretariats became necessary as a result of tension around the leadership of the Local Government Areas, and the possible threat that supporters of the suspended Local Government chairmen were posing to critical infrastructure, lives and properties in the State.
