A 21-year-old man, Gabriel Sylvester, has pleaded guilty to fraud charges after he was arraigned before Justice R.A. Oshodi of the Special Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos State.
Sylvester was among suspects between the ages of 18 and 30 with no source of livelihood, who were raided by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos on August 29, 2022.
An Iphone 6S was recovered from the suspect.
According to the prosecuting counsel, F. Ofoma, the defendant confessed to receiving an Apple gift card worth $100, which he converted to N25,000.
The sum was then spent on foodstuffs, slippers and recharge cards.
The prosecuting counsel stated that the defendant confessed to engaging in online scam.
When the charges were read, the 21-year-old orphan pleaded guilty and begged the judge to temper justice with mercy.
Delivering judgement, Justice Oshodi sentenced him to one-year imprisonment on count one and one-year imprisonment on count two.
He was, however, given a fine option of N50,000 plus community service.
