Ogun Monarch Arraigned for Blinding Trader Over Queen

A monarch, Oba Nureni Oduwaye, has been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, for allegedly blinding a trader, Wasiu Oduwole, at the Moore Blessing Hotel, Ikenne, in the Sagamu area of the state.

The monarch allegedly perpetrated the act when he and his queen visited the hotel for the birthday celebration of a woman identified simply as Iya Alaje.

He had accused the trader, who was invited to prepare pepper soup for the occasion, of dancing with his queen at the event and kicked him in the eye.

The trader, who denied the accusation, said the impact of the attack rendered him blind in his left eye.

The matter was reported at the Sagamu Area Command, where policemen detailed to investigate the case arraigned the traditional ruler on two counts bordering on causing grievous harm and breach of public peace.

The monarch was arraigned on Friday, October 7, 2022.

The charges read in part, “That you, Oba Nureni Oduwaye, on September 21, 2022, around 10.30pm at the Moore Hotel, Shagamu/Ikenne Road in the Sagamu Magisterial District, did unlawfully cause grievous harm to one Wasiu Oduwole by kicking him with the shoe on your leg, which made him sustain grievous eye injury on his left eye and caused permanent blindness on the left eye, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 335 of Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria 2006.”

The case was adjourned till October 19, 2022, for further hearing.
