The Young Litigators Committee (YLC) of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice (NBA SLP) announces the third iteration of its announced Young Lawyers Debate in keeping with its mandate to engage more young lawyers (within 0-7 years PQE) in the activities of the Section of Law Practice (SLP) and to re-activate the waning interests of young lawyers in traditional legal practice (dispute resolution).

The NBA-SLP Conference is slated to take place from July 17, 2023, to July 19, 2023.

During the Young Lawyers Debate, which is intended to be an oral debate, participants will assess and defend their opinions on important legal problems.

The third edition of the Young Lawyers Debate is open to young attorneys (0–7 Years PQE) from around the nation, and participants will have the opportunity to compete for the top prize of NGN 750,000. Along with other awards, the Second Prize winners would receive N500,000, and the Third Prize winners would receive N350,000.

All young lawyers who are within the range of 1-7 years post-qualification and who are registered members of the SLP are eligible to participate in the three-stage debate tournament. The Competition is divided into three stages: the pre-qualification stage (where essay entries are submitted), the semi-final stage (where contestants have individual mini-debates on impromptu debate topics), and the final debate stage (where contestants are paired in teams of two).

To qualify for the pre-qualification stage of this competition, kindly send an essay of 700-900 words on subject “Analysing the Impact E-filing Systems and Virtual Court Proceedings in the Nigerian Judicial System” to [email protected] and copy [email protected] on or before the July 3, 2023. All Essays must be written in Times New Roman font size 12, double line spaced and footnotes in OSCOLA referencing. The Essay should also contain a cover page with the lawyer’s full name, NBA Branch, year of call, telephone number and email address.
