The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Y.C Maikyau SAN has assured members of the association that he is ready to defend the Association and ensure equal and fair treatment of all lawyers in Nigeria.

The NBA President gave the assurance while chairing the quarterly meeting of the National Executive Council of the Association, held in Abuja on 15th of December 2022.

While addressing the NEC Memebers of the Association on the vexed and controversial confrontations between Body of Benchers and the NBA, Maikyau assured Lawyers of his willingness to resign his office rather than compromise on the standard expected of his office.

The NBA had been at loggerhead with the Body of Benchers over the controversial proposed amendment of the Legal Practitioners Act that seeks to bring the NBA under the control of the Body of Benchers.

The two bodies also clashed when the NBA sought the recusal of the Chairman of BoB, Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN over a professional misconduct charge involving his Law Firm, Wole Olanipekun and Co.

The NBA President explained the Association’s boycott of the call to bar Ceremony on 6th and 7th December 2022 as a protest to Chief Olanipekun’s continued stay as BoB Chairman notwithstanding the controversial email from his firm that formed the basis of the professional misconduct charge. He described the contents of the email as “disgusting”.
