Minister to Investigate Alleged Maltreatment of Female Soldier
The Minister of Women Affairs Mrs Uju Kennedy Ohanenye has vowed to investigate claims by a female soldier, Ruth Ogunleye, alleging she was maltreated by some senior officers.
In a widely circulated video obtained from her TikTok account @Ogunleyeruthsavage, Ogunleye detailed serious allegations of unbearable mistreatment by senior officers and appealed to Nigerians for support.
In a statement by her media aide, Ohaeri Joseph, the minister emphasized the importance of addressing such issues promptly to ensure the well-being and fair treatment of female military personnel.
“The contents of the video are so disturbing and should not be allowed to be swept under the carpet, women should not be subjected to any form of maltreatment, dehumanization or harassment especially in an egalitarian society where gender balance and fairness should be upheld by all and sundry, as the Minister of Women Affairs, I remain resolute in my resolve to protect the interest of Nigerian women and strongly condemn the contents of the online video if verified to be true” she said.
Mrs Kennedy-Ohanenye commended the Nigerian Army for its pedigree on discipline, decorum and comportment and hinted that she had initiated communication with the Nigerian Army high Command to ensure that the allegations of sexual harassment are thoroughly investigated and culprits sanctioned accordingly.
Meanwhile, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Friday, vowed that the allegations would be investigated.
He assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Army as “an institution is committed to upholding the integrity and morals of its personnel and as such appropriate actions will be taken.
