Mason Greenwood Released After Three Nights In Prison

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has reportedly increased security measures on his home after he was released on bail on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday and spent three nights in police custody.

On Tuesday it was announced Greenwood was under further arrest on suspicion of threats to kill and sexual assault, following the allegations by a woman.

Police will continue to investigate the accusations despite releasing the England international on bail.

Greenwood’s whereabouts are unknown but he seems to have added heightened security measures to his mansion in Bowdon, Greater Manchester.

As reported by The Sun, two security guards have been posted outside the house while a technician arrived to install a home security set-up.

Greenwood will not return to training or matches until further notice but Manchester United have stopped short of formally suspending him.

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have confirmed the alleged victim is receiving specialist support.

A GMP statement released on Wednesday read: “A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation. ”

Manchester United are believed to have provided security staff to a second home owned by Greenwood, where his parents were following his arrest.

“We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media,” a statement released by the club read. “We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

Following the player facing further arrest, the club released another statement which added: “Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind.

“As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice.”

Greenwood merchandise has been taken down from United’s official website and numerous teammates have unfollowed him on social media.

The Sun adds Greenwood will continue to take home his £75,000-per-week wage pending the outcome of the investigation.

Greenwood’s sponsor Nike have suspended his deal and said they are “deeply concerned” about the accusations made against him.

“We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood,” the American sportswear giants said. “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Greenwood, who joined United in 2007 at the age of six, has made 129 senior club appearances, scoring 35 goals.

He earned his sole England cap in September 2020 before he was sent home by manager Gareth Southgate following a breach of coronavirus protocols.

This season, he has scored six goals in 24 appearances in all competitions, including five goals in 18 Premier League games.

Greenwood signed his first professional contract with the Red Devils in October 2018 and penned an extension until 2025 in February last year.
