The police in Lagos have arraigned a 40-year-old man, Lasisi Babatunde, for allegedly stealing sugar valued at N2.4m.

Babatunde was arraigned on February 1, 2023, before Magistrate L. A. Owolabi of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Ogba area of the state.

The defendant is facing two counts of aiding escape and theft, preferred against him by the police.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Aidamebor Victoria, said the defendant committed the offences in April 2022.

According to the prosecutor, Omohomion Ikhayere, the offences are punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The charges read in part, “That you, Lasisi Babatunde, and other at large, sometime in April 2022, around 5pm in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to aid one Segun Ayorinde, driver of GPC Energy and Logistics Limited of No 4B, Regina Coker Street, Ikeja, Lagos, to escape from the company.

“That you did steal sugar valued at N2.4m only belonging to GPC Energy and Logistics Limited of No 4B Regina Coker Street, Ikeja, Lagos.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Owolabi granted him bail in the sum of N400,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till February 13, 2023, for trial.
