Lagos State Judiciary Announces Annual Vacation From July To September, 2022

The Chief Judge of Lagos State has approved the dates of vacation of the Justices of the High Court, Lagos State in a notice made available to The Lawyer, signed by the Acting Chief Registrar, Lagos State, Mr. T.A Elias.

Hon. Justice Alogba said the vacation dates were approved pursuant to order 49 rule 4 (d) of the high court of Lagos state (civil procedure)rules 2019 approved that Monday, the 25th day of July, 2022 to Friday, the 16th day of September, 2022. Both dates inclusive shall be the period fixed for the long vacation.

The notice which was dated on the 1st day of June, 2022 also contains the full list of the vacation judges as well as their various period of vacation. They include thus:

Ikeja division

2022. The hon. Justice O. A. Taiwo from Monday, the 25th day of July, 2022 to Friday, the 5th day of august, 2022.
2023. The hon. Justice O. A. Okunuga from Monday, the 8^th day of august, 2022 to Friday, the 19th day of august, 2022.

III. The hon. Justice A. O. Adeyemi from Monday, the 22^nd day of august, 2022 to Friday, the 2^nd day of September, 2022.

2022. The hon. Justice Y. R. Pinheiro from Monday, the 5^th day of September, 2022 to Friday, the 16th day of September, 2022.

Lagos division

2022. The hon. Justice O. F. Aigbokhaevbo from Monday, the 25th day of July, 2022 to Friday, the 5th day of august, 2022.
2023. The hon. Justice o. O. Martins from Monday, the 8^th day of august, 2022 to friday, the 19th day of august, 2022.
2024. The hon. Justice O. O. Oshin from Monday, the 22nd day of august, 2022 to Friday, the 2nd day of September, 2022.
2025. The hon. Justice A. M. Ipaye-nwachukwu from Monday, the 5th day of September, 2022 to Friday, the 16th day of September, 2022.

Ikorodu division

2022. The hon. Justice O. A. Odusanya from Monday, the 8^th day of august, 2022 to Friday, the 19th day of august, 2022.
2023. The hon. Justice M. I. Oshodi from Monday, the 22nd day of august, 2022 to Friday, the 2nd day of September, 2022.

Nevertheless, the notice went on to state certain circumstances where the vacated justices will sit or entertain a matter despite their vacation. These circumstances include thus;

1. Notwithstanding the long vacation, the criminal division of the high court of Lagos state may sit throughout the period of the vacation, where a judge of a criminal division is on vacation, a vacation judge may be assigned to deal with all urgent pending criminal cases in the court.
2. Notwithstanding the long vacation any cause or matter may be heard by a judge during the period of the vacation (except on Sunday or public holiday) where such cause or matter is urgent or a judge, at the request of all the parties concerned agree to hear it.
3. Any application for an urgent hearing during the vacation may be made by summons in chambers, before the vacation judge or the judge before whom the substantive case is pending.

Also, the notice established that the long vacation ends on Friday, the 16th day of September, 2022, and the 2022/2023 legal year commences on Monday, the 19th day of September, 2022, and notice was further given that the new legal year services will hold on Monday, the 26th day of September, 2022.
