A cab-hailing service organisation known as Bolt has faced strong opposition from its drivers over a recent 50% fare reduction, which they argue exacerbates their financial difficulties.

Lagos-based app drivers, operating under the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), have announced plans for a protest to demand fairer treatment and improved working conditions within the ride-hailing sector.

AUATON members express concern that the sharp decline in earnings has significantly affected their livelihoods, making it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.

Speaking in a press release on Sunday, the union’s spokesperson in Lagos State, Steven Iwindoye, highlighted the growing frustration among drivers due to continuous fare reductions and perceived unfair treatment by ride-hailing companies such as Bolt, Uber, Indrive, and Rida. He stressed that the only viable path forward is for drivers to unite and take a stand.

In the statement, Iwindoye urged all drivers, regardless of union affiliation, to participate in the planned protest. “We cannot afford to have drivers undermining our efforts by continuing to work under these unfair conditions. The success of this protest depends on the unity and solidarity of all drivers,” he stated.

He further lamented that a significant challenge within the industry has been the reluctance of some drivers to stand up for their rights, with some even working against the collective interests of their peers. “This protest is an opportunity for drivers to set aside their differences and work towards a common goal,” he added.

While awaiting the official announcement of the protest date, Iwindoye encouraged drivers to take proactive steps by voicing their dissatisfaction with the 50% fare cut. “Writing to Bolt and expressing our collective displeasure is a crucial first step. This will help demonstrate our unity and lay the groundwork for the forthcoming protest,” he said.

“When the protest date is confirmed, we must stand together and exercise our collective power to bring about meaningful change. This may require bold action, but by asserting our rights, we can create a fairer and more sustainable future for ourselves and the entire ride-hailing industry.”

He concluded by urging all AUATON members and drivers to come together in demanding fair treatment from ride-hailing companies. “Only through unity can we achieve the change we rightfully deserve,” he emphasised.
