Imo LP Governor Candidate: Democracy Under Threat

Senator Athan Achonu, the Labour Party candidate for governorship in Imo State, has expressed his concern that democracy is facing a serious threat in the country following the conduct of the election in the state.

He criticized the alleged widespread electoral malpractices that occurred during the election.

Achonu also noted that the masses were pushing back against attempts to undermine the people’s will.

Reflecting on the irregularities, Achonu mentioned, “In many instances, INEC officials either refused to sign the results or declined to upload them. You witnessed what happened here. It was only after security personnel intervened that the results were finally uploaded. The supposedly malfunctioning device suddenly began working. Perhaps, if I weren’t from this area, it might not have been possible. There are even areas in Aboh Mbaise where there were no result sheets.”

Despite these challenges, the LP candidate asserted that he was leading in the election.

He asserted, “We are clearly in the lead on the ground. They have made every effort to thwart us, but we will not allow that. The people of Imo will not allow it. I hope INEC is listening to me clearly now. They must declare our results as they are. They cannot alter our results.”

“The All Progressives Congress government should be ashamed of themselves. They have lost the election and are attempting to manipulate the results.”

Achonu emphasized, “Democracy is under threat, but we are pushing back. That is why you see all these people here – so that we can establish genuine democracy and good governance. Naturally, INEC must annul every instance of this madness and call for a rerun.”
