Gov. Fayemi Charges Legal Profession To Sustain Capacity As NBA Commissions Institutes Building

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)  on Thursday, commissioned a building for two of her Institutes; NBA Institute of Continuous Legal Education (NBA-ICLE) and NBA Human Rights Institute (NBA-HRI) in honor of two formidable Senior Advocates of Nigeria: Folanke Solanke SAN and Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu SAN. 

The building was commissioned by the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olukayode Fayemi who doubles as the Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum.

Welcoming attendees, the NBA President, Olumide Akpata stated that the two Senior Advocates had argued cases which had changed the dynamics of Legal Profession, thus attesting to their worthiness of naming the Institutes building in their names. “I welcome you to the commissioning of two NBA institute building in honor of Chief Folanke Solanke SAN and Rotimi Akeredolu SAN.

The two persons we celebrate today are not new to us at all. We may not have had the privilege of seeing the two icons unleash their advocacy in our Courts, but I am sure many of us have read law reports that they have actively participate in that changed the legal landscape of Nigeria”, Akpata stated.

Remarking on the significance of the occasion to the NBA and the legal profession as a whole, Akpata continued thus: “We are commissioning the building right before you, I think those of us who understands these things would know how momentous this is.”

Giving a speech, Gov. Fayemi congratulated the NBA for the commissioning of two buildings which according to him would house two Institutes which in his view are essential to the very existence of the legal profession. He stated that he was particularly delighted to the recognition given to the distinguished legal personalities whose name adorn the building.

Going on he charged the NBA to ensure the Institute are effective. He stated thus: “The NBA Institute of Continuous Legal Education should enhance and sustain the capacity of the legal profession to play an active role in socio-political and economic development in our Country. The process of political an social growth in Nigeria challenges lawyers in terms of services they render.”

He went on to speak that the country needed a well informed legal profession that improved on its knowledge on development not only locally but globally, and as such would profer solutions to some of the problems facing the country.

Gov. Rotimi on his part tasked NBA to promote Human Rights by upholding the rule of law. Speaking on the significance of the commissioning of the building, Gov. Rotimi stated thus: “It is a great step, one in the right direction because as you know continuing legal education is as important as legal education itself. Those in the profession need to learn and re-learn. And the NBA Human Rights Institute is just as important as the Bar itself.”
