Financial Autonomy: JUSUN Meet On Autonomy July
Following threats of strike over the poor welfare of judiciary workers and total autonomy for the judicial arm of government in the country, judiciary workers, under the aegis of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, are set to hold a National Executive Council meeting for July.
The union’s National Treasurer, Jimoh Musa, disclosed the development to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday.
Recall that JUSUN had been engaged in a series of agitations over the poor welfare of judicial workers and the failure of state governors to implement financial autonomy for the judiciary at state levels.
Last week, some justices of the apex court had in a memo addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Muhammed Tanko, lamented the poor welfare of the judiciary.
Speaking with our correspondent, Musa expressed optimism that the cries from the justices would further aid the fight of judiciary workers in the country.
He said, “We have been fighting for the autonomy of the judiciary for only God knows when. Surprisingly, the Supreme Court justices, who are complaining now, did not even support us.
“It is not shocking to see members of the apex court complaining. We know this and we have been shouting, seeking their support, now they are complaining. Why are they complaining? It is a new dawn for them. It is also a plus for us. We can put our heads together and think about plans to make the judiciary better.
“We have fixed a meeting on the matter for next month (July). We are still consulting to find a better way out because this matter must be dealt with once and for all. It is a plus to see our superiors complaining for the world to see that the judiciary is not treated well.
“We will come out with our stand very soon and that will mark the end of issues of judiciary autonomy in this country.
“It has become a do-or-die matter. We just have to make it work in this country.”
Recall that JUSUN, in its fight to achieve financial autonomy of the judiciary embarked on a strike on April 6, 2021 which was suspended on June 9, 2021.
