As part of efforts to secure the nation’s custodial centres in addition to improving the welfare of inmates, the Federal Government has approved the relocation of 29 out of Nigeria’s 250 custodial centres.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in Abuja when he commissioned 39 mini green maria for conveyance of inmates to and from courts, and five bullet resistant guard booths at the headquarters of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) in Abuja.
With some custodial facilities facing the gate of a state Government House, sited within a Government Reserved Area or sharing fence with markets and private residences, the Minister announced the relocation of such facilities.
The acquisition of the vehicles directly responds to the evolving challenges faced by the Correctional Service particularly in ensuring the timely production of inmates in courts.
