Customs Intercept 389 Packs of Cannabis, Others Worth N61m
The Nigerian Customs Service, Kebbi State Command has intercepted items including 389 wraps of cannabis worth N61m from smugglers at Kamba border.
The Controller of Kebbi Area Command, Joseph Attah, spoke in his office at Birnin Kebbi highlighting the command’s achievements in the last one month.
Attah said the month of August was quite eventful, adding that the command heightened its anti-smuggling activities against smugglers and engaged in strategic meetings with traditional, political and youth leaders to gain mutual understanding and compliance.
He said, “While anti-smuggling operations resulted in seizures and arrest, stakeholder engagements resulted in some modest achievements in revenue generation. Enforcement activities resulted in the following seizures: 389 wraps of cannabis sativa (laptop sized), Petroleum Motor Spirit: 824 jerry cans (25 litres each). It also includes 75 bags of foreign fertiliser, 22 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice and 128 bales of second-hand clothing. Twenty two jerry cans of vegetable (25 litres each), one used Toyota Corolla, 54 bags of sugar (50kg each) and eight engine of canoes.’’
He gave the total duty paid value of the items at N61, 559, 568.09, while confirming that one suspect was arrested and later granted administrative bail.
The event also witnessed the official handing over of the cannabis to the Kebbi State Commandant of Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Usman Sule, for destruction.
In his remarks, Sule commended efforts of the customs in the fight against crime, assuring that the two agencies would collaborate for the betterment of the country.
