Arrest Made: Two Individuals Apprehended For Hacking Bank Accounts
In a significant breakthrough, the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police has successfully apprehended two men suspected of engaging in the illegal activity of hacking into bank customers’ accounts. The Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Hauwa Idris-Adamu, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Tuesday in Lagos.
According to Idris-Adamu, the arrest came about as a result of a petition received from the United Bank for Africa (UBA) by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Zone, which includes Lagos and Ogun, Mr. Mohammed Ali.
“On the 8th of May 2023, UBA submitted a petition to the AIG regarding the existence of syndicates specializing in internet fraud targeting various banks in Nigeria, particularly UBA,” stated Idris-Adamu. “These criminals hack into customers’ accounts and surreptitiously transfer their funds.”
Prompted by the petition, the AIG promptly assembled a team of detectives from the Zonal Monitoring Unit who, armed with cutting-edge technology, sprang into action. Their efforts led to the successful tracking down of the two suspects at their hideout in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
During the subsequent interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crimes. “They admitted to operating an extensive network of fraudsters spread across Nigeria, utilizing software to hack into customers’ accounts and discreetly siphoning off their funds from any bank,” disclosed Idris-Adamu.
The fraudulent individuals employed a specific modus operandi that revolved around having access to a customer’s Bank Verification Number (BVN)-linked phone number, enabling them to facilitate effortless money transfers. Shockingly, the investigation has revealed that their activities have affected over 1,000 customer accounts nationwide, resulting in substantial financial losses for the victims.
Further investigation into the incident has unveiled the fact that the syndicate members hail from various regions across the country. Law enforcement authorities are currently intensifying their efforts to apprehend all individuals connected to this criminal enterprise.
While the investigation remains ongoing, the police have assured the public that diligent efforts are being made to ensure a comprehensive probe into the matter. Once the investigation concludes, the arrested suspects will be arraigned in court to face charges relating to their crimes.
This significant development marks a milestone in the fight against cybercrime, sending a strong message that law enforcement agencies are actively working to protect citizens from fraudulent activities. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to safeguarding the financial well-being of the populace, and further breakthroughs are expected in the near future as investigations continue.
