The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya, has frowned on the negative social media reports on the army’s human rights records.

Yahaya, who spoke at the Nigeria Army Chief of Clerks Convention held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, yesterday said the negative reports were the handiwork of “dissident groups.”

Represented by the Chief of Army Administration, Major General Usman Muhammad, the COAS cautioned army personnel to be circumspect, adaptable and responsive in tackling the situation.

He expressed worry about recurring leakages of official documents in contravention of the official secret act.

He said, “I have directed that all the clerks and personnel handling sensitive documents be routinely vetted by the appropriate department of the Nigerian Army.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigeria Army, Major General O.O. Oluyede, said the convention was designed to improve the productivity and capacity of chief clerks in terms of document security, clerical duties, staff work and official management.
