The Labour Party candidate in the November 8, 2025 Anambra State governorship election, George Moghalu, has rejected the result of the poll.
Recall that Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance was declared the winner by the Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, at INEC headquarters in Awka on Sunday, after polling 422,664 votes.
Soludo defeated Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress, who scored 99,445 votes, and Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party, who polled 37,753 votes.
Moghalu came fourth with 10,576 votes.
According to INEC, 16 candidates from 16 political parties participated in the election.
Speaking to journalists at his Nnewi office on Sunday, Moghalu expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the election, alleging widespread irregularities.
“The exercise was marred by widespread vote buying and reports of underage voting in some areas. The November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, in my view, fell short of expectations.
“I hereby reject it in its entirety. I have contested in previous elections, but this one was different. The level of vote buying was alarming,” he said.
Moghalu also alleged that minors were seen with voter cards and allowed to vote.
“Children who were not supposed to be carrying voter cards were openly seen with them and allowed to vote.
“These are issues that raise questions about the integrity of the process. I received reports from my team that in some polling units the LP name appeared on the ballot paper without the party’s logo, making it difficult for voters to identify the party’s position on the ballot,” he said.
He stressed that a more detailed statement would follow after reviewing a comprehensive report from his agents across the state.
“Once I get the full report of the election, we will analyse it and then determine our next course of action. But one thing is clear: I reject the result,” he added.
Moghalu said he did not plan to challenge the outcome in court at this time, noting it would be premature without reviewing all reports.
Addressing claims that some LP agents were absent from certain polling units, he explained that some may have left out of frustration over situations observed during voting.
