Anambra Airport Renamed After Literary Icon Chinua Achebe

The Anambra International Airport would henceforth be known as Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, in honour of the late literary behemoth, Prof. Chinua Achebe. This was announced by Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, on Nigeria’s Independence Day.
The governor clarified the decision to embark on such a significant renaming is part of the government’s endeavors to defer from the usual practice of dedicating infrastructural projects to public officeholders. He pointed out the importance of recognising individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of the nation without having held political positions. The governor underlined his government’s intention of deliberately seeking out and celebrating these relatively unrecognised heroes in diverse fields. This action aimed as an inspiration and motivation for future generations about what truly matters.
The late Achebe is a quintessential example of such a hero. Achebe’s contribution to African literature is praiseworthy. His body of work has not only given African literature an identity but also a potent voice that echoes across the globe. In the governor’s words, “Achebe gave the African literature an identity and a voice. In a way, he rightly reconstructed and redefined who we are, and we will never forget. Indeed, he was not an Anambra hero, nor a Nigerian hero. He was an African and global hero, and yet largely unsung at home.” With the renaming of the Anambra International Airport to Chinua Achebe International Airport, the government aims to ensure that Achebe’s rich legacy is not lost and continues to inspire future generations.
