As the sun sets on a monumental chapter in Nigeria’s political and moral history, the Lagos State Chapter of the Labour Party mourns the passing of one of our nation’s most enduring and revered statesmen, Pa Ayo Adebanjo. At 96, his transition marks not merely the end of an era but a call to action for all who cherish democracy, integrity, and justice.
Pa Adebanjo’s life was a chronicle of principled resistance, visionary advocacy, and unshakeable belief in a Nigeria that works for all—a belief that aligns closely with the foundational ideals of the Labour Party. Though not formally a member of our party, Pa Adebanjo was one of our most courageous supporters and moral guardians, particularly during the most critical moments in our journey toward a new Nigeria.
Born in 1928, Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a towering disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and a founding figure of Nigeria’s progressive movement. His early political engagements were forged in the fire of anti-colonial activism, where he learned to wield ideology, not opportunism, as a political weapon. A lifelong adherent of social justice, Adebanjo spent decades in the trenches advocating true federalism, regional autonomy, and developmental governance.
He was not just a Yoruba elder; he was a national conscience. Throughout military regimes, transitional governments, and democratic administrations, Adebanjo remained a consistent voice for equity, transparency, and the rule of law. Even when sidelined or misunderstood, he never wavered. His voice was often loud, sometimes stern, but always clear—a voice for the people.
In 2022, during the build-up to Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, Pa Adebanjo took a bold and unprecedented step: he publicly endorsed Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. At a time when ethnic sentiments and regional allegiances dominated political conversations, his decision was a breath of fresh air—and a turning point for our movement.
“I am not backing Peter Obi because he is Igbo, but because he is the most competent and has integrity. Nigeria needs someone who can rescue her from the brink,” he said.
With that endorsement, Adebanjo broke ranks with old allies and ruffled feathers within Afenifere. But in doing so, he lit a beacon of hope for a new generation—the Obidient movement—who saw in him not just a father figure, but a statesman willing to put Nigeria first.
His support translated into real momentum on the ground, especially in Lagos State. Young voters, inspired by both Obi and the endorsement from a respected elder like Adebanjo, organized, mobilized, and turned out in unprecedented numbers.
Lagos State, long considered a stronghold of the ruling elite, witnessed a political earthquake during the 2023 presidential elections. Against all odds, the Labour Party’s Peter Obi secured a historic win in Lagos, defeating the candidate of the APC in his supposed home turf. That victory, improbable just months earlier, was not accidental. It was the result of relentless grassroots work, youthful determination, and the moral endorsement of elders like Pa Ayo Adebanjo.
The victory in Lagos was symbolic. It marked a shift in the political psyche of the state and signalled a broader national reawakening. For the Lagos Labour Party, it validated our ideals, our struggle, and our future. For Pa Adebanjo, it was a vindication of his belief that integrity and competence can triumph over entrenched power structures.
In the wake of the presidential win, attention turned to the Lagos State gubernatorial race. Once again, Pa Ayo Adebanjo offered his unwavering support. He endorsed the Labour Party’s candidate for Governor, Arch Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivor giving both public and private backing to our campaign.
His endorsement was more than symbolic. It reassured our supporters that the movement had not only youthful energy but also the wisdom and legitimacy of history behind it. Campaign rallies in Lagos echoed with chants invoking his name. Grassroots mobilizers carried his message into communities often isolated from mainstream politics. His voice, aged but strong, was a bridge between the past and the future.
Though our gubernatorial candidate did not emerge victorious, we achieved unprecedented gains across Lagos State—a feat unimaginable just one election cycle prior. That progress bears the fingerprints of Pa Adebanjo’s influence.
What sets Pa Ayo Adebanjo apart is that his impact transcended politics. He stood for integrity, service, and sacrifice. In an age where political leaders are often tainted by corruption and cynicism, Pa Adebanjo was a refreshing anomaly. He lived modestly. He spoke truthfully. He acted courageously.
Even in his twilight years, he remained politically engaged, offering guidance and critique with equal candor. His house was a pilgrimage site for aspiring leaders, not for patronage, but for wisdom. His pen and voice continued to stir national debates. For us in the Labour Party, he was a mirror, reminding us always of what truly matters.
As we mourn, we also rise. The Lagos State Chapter of the Labour Party pledges to honor Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s memory not with words alone, but with action. We will carry forward his dream of a Nigeria governed by justice, equity, and competence. We will continue to fight for true federalism, transparent leadership, and people-centered governance.
We also call on the youth of Nigeria—especially the Obidient generation—to study the life of this great man. Let his courage inspire your activism. Let his principles shape your politics. Let his legacy be your standard.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo was more than a political figure. He was a father, a mentor, a freedom fighter, and a patriot. He leaves behind a nation still in search of itself, but also a people more awakened, more determined, and more hopeful because of his life.
As the Lagos Labour Party, we say: Thank you, Baba. Thank you for standing with us when it was not convenient. Thank you for showing us that truth, no matter how lonely, will eventually prevail. Thank you for believing in the dream of a better Nigeria.
May your soul rest in perfect peace, and may your legacy never fade.
Signed:
Lagos State Chapter, Labour Party
