Buhari Orders Government Agencies To Go After Marketers Of Bad Fuel

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that providers of substandard fuel must be held accountable.

The President gave the directive on Thursday in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

The presidency issued the statement, following what it called the “issue of petroleum product shortages linked to the inadvertent supply of products of foreign origin into the Nigerian market”.

President Buhari ordered that producers and providers of consumable products be held accountable for substandard services and or products sold by them.

He also directed that, in line with the law, service providers must make full disclosure of relevant information for the consumption of their products, adding that dissatisfied consumers are entitled to a proper redress of their complaints.

The President, who said the protection of consumer interests remained a priority of his administration, expressed the readiness to take all necessary measures to protect consumers from hazardous products, loss or injuries from the consumption of substandard goods.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, had on Wednesday, promised that the Federal government would launch an investigation to unravel the circumstances behind the circulation of adulterated petrol with methanol quantities above the country’s specification.

As of Tuesday, at least 100 million litres of adulterated Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) were reported to be in circulation in the country.

Already, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) had hinted that it might seek compensation from NNPC Ltd for the adulterated petrol sold to them.
