The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has introduced the Nigeria Data Protection Act – General Application and Implementation Directive (NDP Act GAID) to provide clarity on the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) for individuals and organizations.

Speaking at the unveiling, NDPC’s National Commissioner and CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, commended the diverse committee of stakeholders who contributed to developing the directive.

He highlighted its comprehensive coverage of data protection principles, lawful data processing, compliance audits, and data subject rights, as well as its adaptability to emerging technologies.

A key highlight of the directive is the introduction of the Data Subjects’ Standard Notice to Address Grievance (SNAG), which allows individuals to seek remediation for privacy breaches without visiting the Commission in person.

“We have fully democratised the privacy breach remediation process, empowering data subjects to demand action directly from data controllers and processors,” Dr. Olatunji stated.

The NDP Act GAID is expected to enhance compliance, ensuring that data controllers and processors fully understand their obligations while empowering Nigerians with a clear framework to protect their personal information.
