Supreme Court Verdict: Rivers Govt Insists Defection Issue Still Unresolved

The Rivers State Government has stated that it is awaiting a comprehensive briefing on the implications of the Supreme Court’s judgment regarding state allocation and local government administration.

In a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, said the government will thoroughly assess the situation upon receiving detailed information before deciding on the next course of action in the best interest of the state and its residents.

He urged the people of Rivers State to remain calm, and law-abiding, and continue their daily activities while the government seeks further clarity on the ruling.

Johnson, however, clarified that the issue of defection of the 27 lawmakers was not a matter before the Supreme Court, as it is currently pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

“At this time, we are awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the judgment. We will carefully evaluate the situation and determine the next steps to take in the best interest of Rivers State and its people,” the commissioner said.

He emphasized that, in this context, Martin Amaewhule and the 26 others were still seen in the eyes of the Justices as lawmakers.

“Since the issue of defection wasn’t on the table before the learned justices, in their eyes, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers until that matter comes before them,” he said.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Rivers government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the state’s best interests in all matters.

In its ruling on Friday, the apex court also barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the government of Rivers State until it purges itself of what the court describes as flagrant disobedience to court orders.
