The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has warmly congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his historic assent to the Nigeria Maritime University Bill. This significant legislative development, which materialised several years after the concept of establishing a maritime university was first mooted as a solution to the agitation in the Niger Delta, promises to bring far-reaching benefits.

In a congratulatory message signed by Afam Osigwe (SAN), President of the NBA, the legal body emphasised the transformative potential of the new institution. “I congratulate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his historic assent to the Nigeria Maritime University Bill,” Osigwe stated. He went on to highlight that the university will not only create job opportunities for residents of the Niger Delta but will also provide Nigerians with specialised skills in the maritime sector.

The NBA’s President underscored the importance of the bill as a catalyst for economic development and a tool to strengthen peace in the region. “The Nigeria Maritime University will not only create jobs for the people and residents of Niger Delta but will also create opportunities for Nigerians to have specialised skills in the maritime area. The President’s assent is a welcome development towards strengthening the relative peace in the Niger Delta,” he said.

He concluded by urging the people of the Niger Delta to safeguard the institution and ensure it evolves into a conducive learning environment for aspiring maritime experts. The NBA’s commendation of Tinubu’s decision is seen as a positive step towards realising the full potential of the maritime sector in Nigeria, contributing to both economic growth and national stability.
