Reps Propose 65-Year Retirement Age For Armed Forces
The House of Representatives has proposed a bill to amend the Armed Forces’ retirement age and service years.
The bill was passed on Thursday for a second reading and referred to the relevant House committees for future legislative action.
It aims to raise the retirement age of members of the armed forces from 60 to 65 and — from 35 to 40 years in service.
Gaza Gbefwi, a legislator from Nasarawa State and seven other lawmakers sponsored the bill.
The private member bill sponsored by Gbefwi seeks to amend the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20 Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Leading the debate, Gbefwi said the provisions of the principal Act regarding the appointments of the Chief of Defence Staff and other service chiefs as well as related matters lacked desired clarity and contained ambiguity.
