Policemen Face Disciplinary Action After Brutalising Two Women

Some policemen in Anambra State are currently facing disciplinary action after they were caught in a viral video, beating up two sisters, on a claim that the victims could not pay security levy.

One of the two victims had undergone surgery a week ago for appendix before the policemen pounced on them.

Meanwhile, the State Police Command has regretted the action of the police officers.

In the viral video seen on Monday, a policeman with a man in Mufti, in the company of four other policemen was seen beating and punching two young women in front of their apartment in a compound.

Neighbours were overheard in the video telling the policemen that what they were doing to the women was wrong, more so as they were young women.

While the man on mufti was seen punching one of the girls on her stomach and face, two of the five policemen were seen intermittently hitting the girl on the back and face. The other policemen were watching.

Some residents were heard shouting “This girl had medical surgery a few days ago and you are hitting her this way. What offence did she commit to warrant this treatment?”

Meanwhile, an X (formerly Twitter) account user, Nwa with account @Nwaadaz who shared the video of the incident said that the two sisters were beaten because of a security levy.

She wrote: “See the clear Video of what Anambra police did to two sisters in Anambra State because of security levy. And the girl just did Appendix Operation last week.’

When contacted, the Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, he confirmed the incident took place in the state and regretted the action of the police.

He said that the officers in the video had been identified and arrested, adding they are currently facing disciplinary actions.

Ikenga said, “I have seen the video and the issue has been addressed. The officers are currently facing disciplinary action. The person who beat up the woman is not even a policeman, he is a complainant. When they went for the arrest the relative of the suspect called the complainant knowing fully well what transpired they started fighting the complainant.

“But where the police erred is that our officers acted unprofessionally not being able to manage the situation. The officers in question seen in the video have been identified and arrested, they are currently facing disciplinary actions because they couldn’t control the situation. But the person wearing black attire is the complainant and not a policeman.”
