Kano Govt Lifts Curfew

The Kano State Government has lifted the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state following the judgment of the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

The tribunal had on Wednesday sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), declaring Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election.

While a curfew was earlier declared to avoid conflict in the aftermath of the ruling, the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, said owing to the improved security conditions in the North-West state, the curfew has been lifted.

“In light of the improved security situation and the need to ease the hardships faced by our citizens, the government has decided to lift the curfew,” he said Thursday.

The curfew, which had been in effect to prevent potential clashes between supporters of different political parties, had led to heightened security measures across the Kano metropolis.

Security operatives maintained a strong presence, ensuring that the streets remained deserted and that all major routes were monitored.

During the period, shops, markets, and other businesses remained closed, causing varying opinions among residents.

Some expressed their frustration, citing the already challenging economic conditions in the country.

But others saw the curfew as necessary to protect lives and properties.
